BETWIXT & BETWEEN (A one-act play)

To Lucy, spending her 38th birthday in a New York State records bureau is no big deal. Until she’s challenged by a grossed-out 13-year-old Eloise and a caseworker who invites her into the Gap. (No, not that one). Eloise misses the days when Lucy’s imagination conjured grand adventures and what-if games. Why did things turn so dark?

Set just after legislation gave NY adoptees the right to access their original birth certificates, Betwixt & Between is what happens when the truth comes out and buried emotions erupt.

“Where you came from informs who you are, and every New Yorker deserves access to the same birth records – it’s a basic human right.” Governor Cuomo, 2019

British-born writer and performer Maggie Gallant has lived in Austin with her husband, Erik, since 2000. Hot Dogs at the Eiffel Tower, her first solo show, premiered in Austin’s FronteraFest Short Fringe. The show received 5-star reviews at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival in July 2019. A Ken Webster-directed version followed with a five-week run at Austin’s Hyde Park Theatre. Other full-length solo works include the Freddie Mercury tribute ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ and ‘Our Angle in Heaven’, a response to the death of Princess Diana. Maggie’s 2020 FronteraFest piece, How to Belong, was a Wild Card Best of Fest pick.

Through the Austin Community College summer playwriting class, taught by Laura Neill, Maggie’s audio drama concept Tales from the Congress Bridge was selected for an ACC-produced series. Her script, titled The Chase, was one of 12 chosen to be recorded for the series. Episodes will air in fall 2020.
