In preparation for ScriptWorks annual Weekend Fling, we are presenting this workshop with Gary Garrison, author of Perfect Ten: Writing and Producing the Ten‑Minute Play, and A More Perfect Ten. During the Weekend Fling, ScriptWorks members have 48 hours to write a ten-minute play using three contributed ingredients. The event culminates in a public reading of the freshly-penned scripts at 5:30 PM on Sunday, November  23rd. Eight plays will be selected from those written during the Fling for production in the OUT OF INK 2026 short-play showcase in May at Hyde Park Theatre.

The Ten-Minute Play is the latest genre of dramatic writing that has taken the country by storm over the last two decades. What used to be twenty or thirty opportunities a year for writers to see their work produced has mushroomed into a staggering five to six hundred opportunities a year. Theatres everywhere are producing them; writers everywhere are writing them. And yet some dramatists can’t seem to break through the confines of this short play form. This workshop will be explore all the various aspects of crafting a ten-minute play, from structure to author’s intent and audience appeal. We’ll read, write and analyze the form and how to make it work for writers as artists and theatres as producers.

ABOUT GARY GARRISON

For the last 35 years, Garrison’s professional work and creative life has centered on a being a playwright, educating and nurturing playwrights and administrating a variety of playwriting organizations, educational programs and theatre companies that promote dramatists and the development of new plays. In 2014, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts instituted the National Gary Garrison Ten-Minute Play Award given to the best ten-minute play written by a university dramatist. In July ’23 he was featured in American Theatre magazine’s The Subtext podcast with Brian James Polk under the title, More Than Ten Minutes with Gary Garrison. www.garygarrison.com. In 2023 Gary joined the Board of Advisors for the Say Gay Plays (with the Voyage Theater Company), joined Helltown Players of Cape Cod as an advisor and joined the staff of the Provincetown Theater on Cape Cod as Managing Director.
